Located in the downtown of Kunming, Yuantong Temple was first built in the Kingdom of Nanzhao in the Tang Dynasty.

It is one of the earliest temples of Avalokitesvara in China. It consists of Yuantong Precious Hall, Hall of Copper Buddha and Hall of Tantrism, etc. It represents the characteristic of containing Han Buddhism, Southern Buddhism and Tibetan Buddhism in the same temple. It is the largest of its kind in Kunming.
