In 1850, China’s Qing Dynasty Xianfeng Emperor (Xianfeng: “Universal Prosperity”, 1831-1861) was having hard times.

In 1851 Taiping Rebellion exploded and spread rapidly in several southern provinces, threatening the stability of the Empire itself. Xianfeng’s efforts to crush the revolt were strong, with limited success. Images were taken by foreign tourists and published in various Western newspapers.

Some damaged pictures have been retouched by hand.
