Born in the northeastern Chinese port city of Dalian in Liaoning province in 1974, he studied acting at the Shanghai Theatre Academy and since then has worked with some of the most significant film directors in China. In 1998 he moved to Beijing and spent a decade working as an assistant with directors such as Wang Xiaoshuai (Beijing Bicycle) and Liu Jie (Judge).
