Law Lan (simplified Chinese: 罗兰; traditional Chinese: 羅蘭; pinyin: Luó lán), born Lo Yin-ying (卢燕英; 盧燕英; Lú Yànyīng) on 13 November 1934, is a respected and seasoned actress in Hong Kong’s film and television industry.
Law Lan’s entry into the film industry dates back to 1939, where she was predominantly cast in antagonistic roles during the black and white film era. The stage name “Law Lan” was adopted on her boss’s recommendation, who felt the name mirrored the persona of Shanghai socialites (交際花), aligning well with the type of roles she portrayed.
In 1971, Law Lan transitioned to TVB, diversifying her acting portfolio by participating in a variety of drama series. This move allowed her to break away from being typecast exclusively in villainous roles. She also became a part of the popular nightly variety show, “Enjoy Yourself Tonight,” which featured skits, singing, dancing, and games, all filmed before a live audience.
Despite being a devout Roman Catholic, Law Lan is well-known for playing the role of a supernatural medium in over 36 Hong Kong horror movies. Her remarkable performance as 四婆 (literally “fourth granny”) in the movie “Bullets Over Summer” earned her the “Best Actress” award at the 19th Hong Kong Film Award in 2000, marking her as the oldest recipient of this prestigious award.
Tragedy struck Law Lan’s early life when her father passed away at the age of 34 due to complications from opium withdrawals during World War II. Since the death of her Indian mother in 1994, Law Lan has lived alone, an event that also influenced her decision against immigrating to Canada.
