Shijiazhuang, the capital of the northern province of Hebei is in lockdown in an attempt to curb the spread of the coronavirus.

China today reported the highest number of infections in the past five months, or 63 cases, including 51 located in Shijiazhuang.

Yesterday there were 32 cases, of which 20 were located near Beijing.

The authorities of Shijiazhuang, which has 11 million inhabitants, have launched a series of mass tests and have banned gatherings.

Residents and vehicles from the areas considered most at risk cannot leave their neighborhoods.

The city went on high alert on Tuesday, with teams setting up to track the evolution of the pandemic in the area.

Chinese state television also reported that Shijiazhuang citizens are not allowed to go to the train station.

In recent days, some cases had been identified in the city of Dalian, in the province of Liaoning. Authorities in the southern province of Guangdong said they identified at least one case of a patient infected with the new variant of the coronavirus discovered in South Africa.
