Synopsis

The film centers around Li Xuelian, a woman who orchestrates a fake divorce with her husband to circumvent Chinese property laws, which allow only one property per married couple. Their plan is for each to buy a property post-divorce. However, after the divorce, her husband marries another woman and accuses Li of adultery, equating her to Madame Bovary.

Angered and feeling betrayed, Li seeks to nullify the original divorce to legitimately divorce her husband and clear her name. She embarks on a relentless pursuit of justice, escalating her case through various levels of bureaucracy, from local police to provincial authorities.

Li’s journey is fraught with challenges. She attempts to hire hitmen to kill her ex-husband, faces accusations from him, gets arrested and sent to re-education camps, and is manipulated into a fake relationship by local authorities trying to stop her crusade. Despite her persistence, her efforts become moot when her ex-husband dies, leaving her unable to confront him about his betrayal and clear her name.
