Hangzhou call: “Too many cicadas? Eat them to save a tree”

Last Updated on 2020/10/31

According to CCTV on July 10th, in Hangzhou, Zhejiang Province, the local Greening management station issued a call inviting citizens to eat the swarms of cicadas that are damaging the public green.

In recent years, the local municipality has sought to improve public green space. The cicadas, as amiable insects and symbol of the summer, unfortunately, represent a natural threat to the green.

With the arrival of the heat, cicadas multiplied rapidly. Local authorities have tried to limit the damage, but the insects are simply too many. Cicadas reproduce in large numbers in July and August.

Sun Xiaoping, the official in charge of green spaces in Hangzhou, said that in these cases authorities generally try to introduce natural predators, but the natural predators of the cicadas are just some mantids and some birds. However, due to the lack of these natural predators, they will try to rely on men.

From a nutritional point of view, cicadas represent a high protein food.

The people of Hangzhou, for now, do not seem to be too enthusiastic about the idea. According to Sun, some seniors in the past have eaten the cicadas, but the younger generations do not seem too enticed by this culinary experience.

Some local netizens, ironically said that in these cases they must call the Cantonese.
