China to build Mars village in Qinghai Province

China’s project of building a village (including a sort of theme-park) simulating the environmental conditions on Mars in Qinghai, as part of China’s Mars exploration preparation, was approved by experts in Beijing Thursday.

The project is led by the academician Ouyang Ziyuan.

China Mars Village project site is located on the north edge of the Qaidam Basin in Qinghai Province, Haidixi Dachaidan, in the Qaidam basin.

The terrain and desert scenery are very similar to the surface of Mars, and has been dubbed “the most Martian place on Earth.”

According to the feasibility study, the project covers an area of ​​about 702 hectares and will build tourist service centers, ‘Mars communities’, Mars bases and supporting infrastructures with a construction area of ​​about 42,400 square meters and a total investment of about 850 million yuan.

The construction of the Project will target different groups of people, popularizing science, education of astronomy and spacecraft, and enhancing the scientific knowledge of the general public, especially young people.

At the same time, it is also possible to conduct space science-related research experiments and simulation training to create an outfield scientific experiment base.
