Pokemon Go turns into a battleground between China and Taiwan

Last Updated on 2021/12/19

John Hanke, CEO of Niantic, the American software house behind Pokemon Go, posted a tweet in traditional Chinese welcoming the Taiwanese players to join the videogame community.

Pokemon Go arrived at the Taiwanese Apple Store and Google Play last Saturday. However, many mainland Chinese players posted hate replies in simplified Chinese, such as:

Taiwan is Chinese. Do you release the game in little Taiwan and not China? What are you thinking?
Taiwan is a Chinese province, please write China after Taiwan (Taiwan, China).
Overlooking a market of tens of millions for a market of 100s of thousands? Stupid choice.
The feelings of the Chinese players are deeply hurt.
What about China?

Taiwanese players replied with:

Taiwan and China are two different countries anyways.
it’s just a game, how low can mainlanders go?
Thank you for using proper Chinese characters

As stated by Appledaily, Hanke probably wasn’t prepared for this flame war. At the moment, it’s possible to play the game in China using a VPN. Gamefreak announced the next set of pokemon games will have localized chinese versions.
