Floating girl in Beijing

Levitating portrait is often appreciated because bring to mind the flight, the possibility of escape from the rules of gravity and magic or superheroes.

In the past, when talking about levitation, the connection was with religion; nowadays, in the web era, levitation is related to creative photography. On websites like Flickr, DeviantArt, Lomography is possible to find photos with levitating people or objects (It’s important to remember that on the Lomography website pictures are just analog, shoot on 35mm or 120mm, on the contrary in the other two sites there are also digital photos and photo manipulations). However, recently, this concept has begun more and more popular when Natsumi Hayashi shared her collection of photos where she looks almost like a superheroine who flies around Tokyo. Her pictures have become very popular in the Chinese network, and a girl from Beijing, Cong Lin, inspired by Natsumi Hayashi began her series of levitating portraits. Her album motivated other Chinese photographers to try a levitating portrait. The idea of “Free Running” which reproduces the dream and magic is increased in the Chinese network and there are more people that experiment with this kind of photo.
